Hump Ridge Track - Prime Walking Package Inc. Accommodation

Embark on an epic hiking adventure through the stunning coastal region of the South, trekking up to the beautiful sub-alpine region of the Hump Ridge and passing over historic viaducts deep in the heart of New Zealand's lush native forest.

At 55km, the Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track provides a scenic 3 day loop walk offering outstanding panoramic views of Fiordland, the Southern Ocean and Stewart Island.

Day 1: Rarakau to Okaka Lodge (22km)

The trail will take you on a journey through beautiful native forest and high over cliff tops with outstanding views. Experience Bluecliffs Beach where Hector dolphins often play in the surf. Meander on into Fiordland National Park, making your way to Stag Point where you can often hear the melodic calls of the native Kaka & Kakariki birds. Enjoy the views of Te Wae Wae Bay to Stewart Island before reaching the summit ridge and Okaka Lodge. For mesmerizing views of Fiordland, the Waitutu Forest and the Southern Ocean, take the loop track - a scenic highlight of the Hump Ridge Track.

Day 2: Okaka Lodge to Port Craig Lodge (20km)

Descend the Hump Ridge and reimmerse yourself in the bush with towering rimu, rata and totara trees. Journey through private Maori land once you reach sea level and see the three historic wooden viaducts including the Percy Burn Viaduct, the largest wooden viaduct in the southern hemisphere. Explore the historic sawmill town of Port Craig, reached by following an old railway track. Seals and penguins are often seen from the sheltered bay located just 5 minutes from the lodge.

Day 3: Port Craig Lodge to Rarakau (20km)

Journey over a series of bluffs as the track winds through lush native bush before reaching the amazing Blowholes Beach. Walk along the clifftops with outstanding views of the area and cross the swing bridge at the Waikoau River. Your journey draws to a close with a 2km beach walk followed by a final walk back to Track Burn.

The Prime Walking Package includes:

  • One night pre-departure B&B accommodation in Tuatapere (double or twin share)
  • Heli packing the first day/sector - Rarakau to Okaka Lodge
  • Bunk room accommodation at both Okaka & Port Craig Lodge
  • Hot shower & loan towel at each lodge
  • Sleeping bag & liner provided at the lodges
  • Evening meal - Back Country Meal Pouch (freeze dried) each night, select and prepare yourself
  • Hot porridge for breakfast at each lodge
  • All crockery, cutlery, cooking equipment & gas at the lodges
  • Gas heated lounge & dining room
  • Flush toilets & running water
  • Refreshments, snacks, beer & wine are available for purchase at Okaka & Port Craig Lodges.
  • Optional Upgrades (To be added when you proceed to checkout):

  • Upgrade to a premium room at our lodges with twin king single/super king: $100 per room per night (max 2 persons per room)
  • Track transport from Tuatapere to the start of the track: $45 per person return
  • Additional helipacking for Days 2 & 3: $100 per pack, per sector. Please check for availability and minimum numbers are required
  • Helilift: fly direct to the lodges - from $200 per person, per sector
  • What to bring: In both lodges, all crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils, pots, pans, gas, tea towels, dish washing liquid and recycling bins are provided. Walkers need to provide their own food. Drinking water is available at both Lodges and most streams are safe to drink from. Tea, coffee and milk can be purchased from the lodges.

    Fitness: A moderate to high level of fitness is required to complete this walk.

    Location: Tuatapere. 1 Hour drive from Invercargill and 2.5 hours drive from Queenstown.
