Oamaru - Steampunk HQ

Steampunk HQ - It is crazy, quirky and unique; unlike any other visitor attraction in this universe!

Steampunk HQ NZ’s premier Steampunk experience is a museum and workshop situated in the historic Victorian precinct of Oamaru. It is crazy, quirky and unique; unlike any other visitor attraction in this universe!

Outside of the imposing free-standing Oamaru stone building, "steampunk" engine SP001 greets visitors by belching flames, smoke and eyrie sounds; whilst inside, a museum of two large darkened rooms and a basement presents a theme of a dark post-apocalyptic vision of a future "as it might have been".

Contraptions and bizarre machinery featuring heavy use of copper, gears, pipes, gas cylinders, as well as an ensemble of skeletal sculptures are lit by flickering lights and accompanied by film, projection and sounds. A back door leads to a large yard with projects and machines in various stages of being "steampunked" including a train carriage, “aethertractor” and giant motorbike. The building's exterior walls are decorated with creations such as giant flies and a fisherman made from metal and industrial parts.

The Infinity Portal is the latest creation; a gateway to other dimensions, both real and imagined. All the walls are completely reflective and a grid of hundreds of multi coloured LED lights are suspended from the ceiling, playing light sequences that move and ripple through the space.

bookme NOTE: This is one of the most interesting and unusual attractions in NZ - no question about it.

Steampunk's a winner.

Kids were amazed and spent 45 minutes getting through first room. Their favourite was the vault with mirrors and lightshow. A great morning.

steam punk.....brilliant

Whilst very Mad Max like the steam punk connection stems from an art exhibition in the town a few years ago. On conclusion they had some very large exhibits and found a place in the lovely historic quarter to put them. I am not a great fan of the genre but you don't have to be. They are clever individual sculptures and include a boat built for the film Master and Commander at Weta studios we had visited in Wellington. Really good fun day and the portal exhibit is well worth visiting. Could easily charge double and still be good value.

Steampunk XXXL

I saw this online and didn't think it appealed at all...and then we drove past! The train was an absolute show stopper! It was closed but we booked tickets online...at the gate! AMAZING!!! Loved the whole experience! Fun! Exciting! Something for everyone! Great staff!

Steampunk Museum - Oamaru

Oamaru is a great little town: a rare treat to see so many interesting old buildings in one place. The town has really made the effort to celebrate its industrial past rather than ripping it down and replacing it with faceless, 'modern' architecture. The Steampunk museum is one out of the box. A very original concept and great for anyone who loves old collectables and artefacts of that nature. This town and the museum are now on my list as one of the must visit places in New Zealand.
