Picton - Historic Ship - Edwin Fox Ship & Visitor Centre - Worlds oldest Merchant Ship

The Oldest Merchant ship in the World!

The Edwin Fox Ship & Visitor Centre is a rare example of our long gone past.

It has been a convict ship, an immigrant ship bringing early settlers to New Zealand and a trader.

It may have even bought your early fore-bearers to New Zealand or Australia!!, and what stories it has to tell.

Edwin Fox Ship & Visitor Centre in Picton is a must do.

It is very highly rated and offers an ideal all weather activity and it is particularly family friendly.

Try lying on a straw bed, as the early travellers did. See the interactive displays and amaze yourself at the hardships the early seafarers were subjected to.

This is a classic part of New Zealand maritime history right in the heart of Picton.

    Fascinating ship!

We did not do much research about the Edwin Fox prior to the museum visit and we were blown away by the ship and its history. The museum room contains many items recovered from the ship and you can watch a documentary about its last voyage (to the current dry dock in Picton). The ship itself is fascinating, walking on the original teak wood is really moving, considering that soldiers, convicts, immigrants and many others have stepped there before you. You can lie down in the bunks and enter a former convict cell and just imagine how the 12-14 week trip across the oceans must have been in the mid to late 1800s. Overall a great experience (also for kids), don't miss it if you're in Picton!

    Surprise delight!

We arrived with young children in Picton on a rainy afternoon looking for a way to spend the afternoon. Found the Edwin Fox on bookme and decided to give it a go, I must be honest and say it didn’t really interest me but looked like something dry to do! But wow!! We ended up spending over 2 hours there, even past closing time (we didn’t even realise, we weren’t even rushed out!) the ship itself is incredible, so well preserved and facisnatingly done up to get an idea of what it must’ve been like. Great job guys!
