Instead of paddling in circles... shhh... your knowledgeable, qualified local guide knows all the secret spots including when and where to go to maximise your time on the water, and most importantly they will keep you safe in New Zealand's extreme & changeable weather conditions!

Seventy-five kilometres from Christchurch, Akaroa is a historic French settlement nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano. The clean, sparkling water of the harbour is the home to a variety of amazing sea life, including the Hector dolphin, the world’s smallest dolphin, as well as heaps of seabirds, NZ fur seals and the smallest penguins in the world...little white-flippered penguins.

You don’t need any previous kayaking experience; in fact, most guests have never kayaked before. But please note: you DO need a good level of fitness and hand/ eye coordination. You need to be able to learn to control your kayak quickly and be able to paddle for up to 2 hours ( sometimes into the wind).

Groups are small, with a maximum of 14 guests per safari, and the equipment is new and stable. You’ll get full instructions and a safety briefing before you start, so you’ll be safe and secure on your Akaroa Guided Kayak Safari adventure.

Fun and informative, all in a beautiful setting

We had an awesome experience with Akaroa Guided Sea Kayaking Safaris in February. Our tour guide Joey was great fun and very informative (he also kindly retrieved my cap when it flew into the water!). While we weren't lucky enough to spot any dolphins, some stingrays could be seen swimming below the surface and some shags came quite close which was cool. The scenery was beautiful, and despite the fairly strong winds (which made things quite tough at times), we wouldn't hesitate to recommend this company to anyone who fancies getting out on the water and learning a thing or two about this amazing place!

Happy time kayaking and best way to spot details!

Joey was a fantastic guide. He was knowledgeable about the local geology and wild life. We enjoyed his jokes and eye for spotting details (fun to know you can brew beer from the roots of the cabbage palm.) Exploring by kayak is the best way to appreciate the details of this unique ecosystem and support it by making a sustainable transport choice! Super fun time paddling!

A must do

Lots of fun, and a really cool, intimate way of getting to know the area. even in slightly choppy water the kayaking was not hard and no sore arms the next day. Greville (instructor) tailored the trio to the weather conditions and was really knowledgeable about the area. An unexpected bonus was seeing two little blue penguins! Highly recommend and would go again in peak season next year.

Prejudice towards Bookme customers

The tour operator, Greville acknowledged that the seas near the shore was a bit rough. Initially my partner and I struggled as we had not kayaked before (I had one previous experience but it was many years ago so I was essentially a beginner). We were quite slow as a result. What we remember most was the female guide Allie who shouted to Grevor: "These guys are on a discounted trip, and the others paid the full price, so we can't wait for these guys" I have left a full review on tripadvisor to explain the whole story.

An excellent morning

We had a really great time. The owners were great at staying in touch regarding weather conditions and our guide Philip was funny, likeable, and knowledgeable. Overall a great experience that I would recommend to anyone.
