“Fly with an instructor to try viewing the world from a gliding club perspective”.
Canterbury Gliding Club is based at the foothills of the Southern Alps in a perfect location for soaring. We are also close to the Inland Scenic Route Highway 72, if you are heading off down south afterwards. Refer to Map.
One of our experienced instructors will take you on a trial instructional flight, during which time you will be soaring above local mountains, rivers and lakes.
Your instructor will also encourage you to take control and have a go yourself.
You will receive a full briefing about the glider, its controls and basic instruments before climbing on board and aero towing to the local mountains.
You also get to sit in the front seat to get an uninterrupted view.
Your instructor will tell you how we glider pilots search for lift to stay air borne.
You will get fantastic views of the Southern Alps and Canterbury foothills.
There may be on opportunity to extend the flight, depending on conditions, just talk to your instructor. It will be a truly unforgettable experience and our aim is to spark your interest in this amazing sport.
We have a great club and some very experienced pilots, several of whom hold current world and New Zealand records.
You may have heard of Richie McCaw or seen the fabulous New Zealand movie Chasing Great with the stunning gliding clips and a bit of rugby in it also?
Well Richie is a member of our club. We can’t promise he will be out there when you are, but you never know!

This was my 60th birthday gift. This was awesome. We were welcome by all the glider club team. We were offered some coffee and donuts, waiting for the weather to improve. Then we were taking to the glider, explained thoroughly what was going to happen, the safety rules, the instrumentation and controls. Then we took off and as soon as the tug plane released us, the instructor gave me the controls (this was a full dual controls glider). What a sensation ! The responsiveness to the controls is so immediate. And the feeling to surf on the air and play with the wind ! And the panoramic and unobstructed view, unbeatable by any classical aircraft. I wish I could do it again, and again and again.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by the friendly staff there who all had a great passion for gliding. The safety aspects and how the trial flight would be conducted were all explained to me in great detail and in a clear and simple way as well. My instructor was enthusiastic and thorough in teaching me the basic principles of flying the glider - I was allowed as much hands-on time as the conditions permitted. He also took time to highlight the beautiful scenery we saw airborne. Overall, an experience not to be missed for both the joy and freedom of gliding and the scenery!
