The Great Walk up Mt Hay is a testament to the natural beauty that graces the Eastern Shores of Lake Tekapo. As you ascend from 750 meters to 1000 meters above sea level, you'll be treated to breathtaking panoramas that showcase the vivid hues of Lake Tekapo against the backdrop of the Southern Alps. The landscape unfolds in a mesmerizing display. Spot some of the farm residents along the way, consisting of 12,000 Merino sheep, 700 Angus cows, 30 alpacas, 25 horses and 15 working dogs! You can also spot many wild animals around the farm too.

Conveniently located just a 10-minute drive from the town of Lake Tekapo, Mt Hay beckons with its towering presence and promises an unforgettable journey. Whether you're an avid hiker or a nature enthusiast, Mt Hay has it all. This climb will take on average take 3 hours to reach the summit, worth the walk up!

Itinerary

  • Check in at office in town
  • 10 minute drive to Mount Hay Station and further 20 minute drive to the bottom of Mt Hay
  • Walk up Mount Hay for stunning 360 degree views of Lake Tekapo and surrounding high country
  • Learn the rich history of Mt Hay and the farm, including all the Flora and Fauna in the surrounding land
  • Descend out of the high country back towards Lake Tekapo township
