A Shamarra Alpaca Farm Tour is an unparalleled opportunity to get up close and personal with alpacas, learn about this loving animal, and create some memories with friends and family in a stunning location.
You’ll find your new furry friends here at Shamarra Alpacas, home to a herd of 170 alpacas in a beautiful harbour on the slopes of an extinct volcano and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills.
Shamarra Alpacas is only an hour’s drive from Christchurch, and a scenic 20 minute trip from the historic seaside village of Akaroa.
Our panoramic views of Akaroa harbour and the rolling hills and peaks of the surrounding valleys are breath-taking, and will make every one of your selfies with an alpaca post-worthy. This is no ordinary trip to an alpaca farm.
Itinerary
- Your tour starts with a brief introduction & a quick safety briefing.
- Next feel the incredible cashmere-like softness of superfine alpaca whilst simultaneously learning about its amazing qualities.
- Then you will get to interact with the Alpacas, see our sustainable farming practices first hand, and learn about how we keep our adorable alpacas safe, healthy and happy.
- Feed the mothers with their young by their side.
- At the end of your tour, enjoy a beverage and one of our famous home-baked cookies.
- You’ll then be able to browse the Shamarra Alpaca Shop. It’s a boutique collection of luxurious, natural and 100% dye-free alpaca knitwear made in New Zealand!

Upclose with Adorable Alpacas
Our family had a fantastic experience at Shamarra Alpaca Farm! Seeing and feeding the cute alpacas up close was a highlight, and Jean was a great guide—knowledgeable, engaging, and happy to answer questions. A great experience for the whole family and bonus of such a beautiful view from the farm!

Great Experiences, Great Staffs & Cute Alpacas
Family visit from Malaysia. Booked this tour thru Book Me, smooth booking process. The staffs is friendly and knowledgeable. There is so many cute Alpacas to cuddle and take picture, you can also feed the Alpacas. Lastly, credit to the yummy cookies. Thanks team.

Es war ein wunderschönes & atemberaubendes Erlebnis! Einer der schönsten Orte den man haben kann, um diese süßen flauschigen Wesen zu kuscheln. Alle waren so herzlich & warm! Von Alpaka über Hundi bis Mensch!🙏🏼 Ich bin super dankbar, dass ich meinen letzten Tag in Christchurch dort verbracht hab! Komplette Empfehlung, wenn man diesen sonst eher schüchternen Tieren näher kommen will. Wenn man ihnen Achtsam & mit Respekt näher kommt, kann man sie sogar umarmen.🥹 Sehr dankbar!
