First Light Kayak Tour - Kaka Point, Catlins

Our small group tours give you the opportunity to view the remote Catlins Coast. You'll observe not only diverse and dramatic scenery but unique wildlife that call this place home.

  • Paddle across the seascape and watch the sunrise over the horizon
  • Observe rare and endangered wildlife - albatross, fur seal, cormorants, sea lion and perchance the yellow-eyed penguin
  • Breath-taking scenery, including 'The Nuggets'
  • The Catlins largest fur seal and cormorant colony
  • Knowledgeable guide with over twenty years experience in and around this coast
  • Prior kayaking experience is not necessary

As the sun goes up and the early morning paddle crosses the seascape, you’ll feel like the only person on the ocean, indeed a unique and authentic experience. As we head towards the breath-taking rock formations, locally known as ‘The Nuggets’, your knowledgeable guide will search for interesting and endangered wildlife to observe. The curious but playful fur seal could swim over to say hello. You may catch a glimpse of the yellow-eyed penguin or a visit from the albatross soaring in close searching for food. Once the sun is high in the sky, we’ll return to our historical launching bay.

Trail time is a two-hour experience

Paddle time is one/half hours.

Great for Beginners! A Truly Unique Experience!

Jared was a phenomenal guide and instructor. While a few of us decided to swim around instead of paddle out, Jared maintained our safety and gave amazing tours of the Kaka Point coast with its wildlife. Jared communicated well both before the tour and during the tour (we could actually hear him above the wind and surf). Definitely will bring my more athletic friends to join. If you are non-standard size, do let Jared know ahead of time.

The best kayak tour on the South Island

Jarad was an awesome guide and showed us the best of Nugget points wildlife and was very knowledgable about the kelp and other aspects of the coast we were exploring. The equipment was great, all in great condition. We had a wonderful time and saw seals swimming, a blue penguin and an albatross all within meters of our kayak!

Perfect place for kayaking

The rocks of Nugget point is a very spectacular landscape, probably the best place for kayaking in the Catlins! There are a of birds including some albatross and some small blue pinguins and it is nice to see the fur seal colony from the sea. The guide knows everything about the area and about the wildlife.
