Larnach Castle Entry

Larnach Castle - Dunedin's Must See Visitor Attraction.

  • Enjoy the incredible views across the Otago Peninsula to be enjoyed at the top of the tower!
  • The impeccable castle gardens - one of the most beautiful and prestigious gardens in the world
  • Explore the lavish high-ceilinged rooms filled with magnificent furnishings and materials from all over the world
  • Soak up the castles rich, exciting, scandalous and tragic history!

William Larnach built Larnach Castle for his beloved wife over 144 years ago and it stands proud as New Zealand’s only genuine castle.

15 years of painstaking construction by master craftsmen made this building a majestic and imposing mansion and one of the most iconic buildings in the country.

The castle is symbolic of Dunedin’s rich history and heritage and a visit to it is a must do for locals and visitors alike.

The castle has had many uses in its time, from mental asylum, to a hospital for soldiers to a nuns retreat. The ballroom was once even used as a holding pen for sheep long before the current owners took on the mammoth task of restoring the castle to its former glory.

Highly recommend

An amazing and beautiful castle and the work done and to be done deserves our support. Thank you for having this beautiful place open to the public. The day we visited it was raining, cold and foggy so would love to visit on a sunny day next time.

Great family outing

We visited on a miserable day but were pleasantly surprised how warm it was inside . We didn't find out until later that you can pay a little extra to get an audio tour which we will definitely purchase for on our next visit. Our 11 yr olds and a 14 yr old also loved it too . Because we saved money by purchasing on bookme we spent our saving and more in the cafe , it feels like the least we could do in these tough times . The food too was top notch . We will definitely return again in the summer , can't wait to see the gardens on a nice day . The hubby was not at all keen to visit but now planning our next trip, he is telling everyone how much he enjoyed it .

Definitely worth a visit

We really enjoyed our tour of the gardens. They were stunning & so we’re the views. As well as the view from the top if the Castle. Well done to the family who have restored it.
