We thoroughly enjoyed our walk through the Waimangu valley. It’s a self-guided walk along a footpath, following a map to read at numbered points along the way. The weather was warm and we had clear views of all the rock formations along the way, the bubbling hot springs, steamy lake and wonderful colours of nature around us. The path was mostly downhill but you can stop at 2 bus collection points if you want a ride back to the Visitors entrance. We continued the 2 hr walk down to the jetty to explore the lake by boat. Our guide explained the history of the lake’s formation and was very informative about the surrounding vegetation. It was amazing to stop by a guyser during the trip and to see nature’s force as the water shot up after being heated by the lava below. It was a super place to visit and we highly recommend booking it.
Totally recommend. It feels you have the park all to yourself.
We had a fantastic day, so much to see, we spent hours here Loved the boat trip, Martin was a fabulous guide, very interesting and informative The bus system worked very well and Cheryl was very friendly Nice food at the cafe and well priced gifts in the shop Very good signage and we loved the evidence of Maori heritage and care for the land
