Located 40 minutes from Christchurch International Airport, Canterbury Gliding Club is based in the foothills of the Southern Alps, in a perfect location for soaring!
Soar above local mountains, rivers and lakes as your experienced instructor takes you on this trial instructional flight. Take control and have a go at gliding by yourself, with the instructor there to encourage you! This experience includes a full briefing about the glider, its controls and basic instruments before climbing on board and aero-towing to the local mountains. Learn how to search for lift to stay airborne and enjoy fantastic sights of the Southern Alps and Canterbury foothills with your seat up font with an uninterrupted view.
There may be on opportunity to extend the flight, depending on conditions, just talk to your instructor. It will be a truly unforgettable experience and our aim is to spark your interest in this amazing sport. We have a great club and some very experienced pilots, several of whom hold current world and New Zealand records. You may have heard of Richie McCaw or seen the fabulous New Zealand movie Chasing Great with the stunning gliding clips and a bit of rugby in it also? Well Richie is a member of our club. We can’t promise he will be out there when you are, but you never know!

Soaring
The team at Canterbury Gliding were very friendly and professional and they made sure I had an fantastic experience. After an introduction to the aircraft I was soon in the front seat and we were off into the sky. Handling was explained to me and I was given control. The sensation of gliding around the skys is amazing. I have already recommend the experience to all my family and friends.
