A very interesting experience and a great tour, led by a genuine Māori! We got a glimpse into the lives of today’s Māori and learned how they balance change and modernity with their traditions. Above all, we learned a lot about the local tribe and how they use the geysers and hot springs and incorporate them into their daily lives.
Really good tour guide, very sensible and sympathic tour, good price
Really cool geothermal village. Very interesting experience.
Learned a lot about the history of this village and current practices - the hour went by really quickly, even though the experience was not rushed at all. My guide emphasized the cooking, communal bathing practices and diverse religions of community. We got to taste some corn boiled in the alkaline hot spring, and they let you stay as long as you like in the village to take a closer look at the church, meeting house, and wait for the geyers to spout. Highly recommend!

Great insight in the Maori culture
My husband and I visited the Maori Village in Rotorua on our honeymoon vacation in October 2025. The tour was guided by a woman who actually lives in the village and she told us about the Maori traditions and the steaming sulfur pools and how they are still used for cooking. We were invited to eat a piece of sweet corn being cooked in hot sulfur water and it was delicious. The scent of the sulfur springs is quite unusual but still it is a very interesting experience. In the village you may have the chance to see the hydrothermal explosion of the Pohutu geyser (we weren’t lucky). For those who are interested in the Maori culture this village is a must-do. Just be prepared for the intense sulfur scent and a lot of Maori vocabulary. We certainly had a good time and recommend it to everyone!
