Experience the magic of this geothermal landscape on a self-guided walk along the trail at Craters of the Moon.
Take in the incredible sights of the bubbling mud pools and steaming craters as you walk through this other-worldly landscape.
Our well-maintained tracks are easy to follow and suitable for most people, the main walkway will take you on a 40-minute leisurely stroll through the valley and the optional 20-minute upper walkway will take you up the steps for fantastic views from the lookout.
Take your time, stop for photos and enjoy at your own pace.
Loop Track - Suitable for pushchairs. Wheelchairs are permitted but some areas of the path are more difficult to navigate than others. The path is mostly boardwalk but it is recommended that you have a person to assist in areas where there is a gravel path.
Upper Walkway - A moderate walk with multiple steps (totally worth it), not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

Great experience
Peaceful walk around impressive landscape with great information boards.
Glad you had a peaceful walk and enjoyed your visit.
It was good because there was a rare geothermal cave.
Came here a few years ago and decided to revisit with overseas friends. However there was very little to see in the way of thermal activity or experience. The walk was actually quite long and we were told we couldn't walk some of the way and then turn back. Strictly a full walk clockwise direction only. We are in our 50's and quite fit, we found the walk a long way and very little to see. I would not suggest children walk it. Everything is dried up and minimum thermal activity.
We are sorry you did not enjoy your time here. In summer months activity is reduced in comparison to winter months as it is hotter and less moisture about. Our track is one way for health and safety reasons; the boardwalk is too narrow to accommodate a walker and say a pram walking the opposite way. If you found you could not continue and called our emergency number we would have suggested you turn around depending how close you were to the kiosk, being careful on the way back and would have been happy to chat about your experience after.
