A delightful step into a bygone age
Yesterday we had the great pleasure of visiting the Howick Historical Village in the company of my French relations, and found it a most agreeable excursion indeed. The village is preserved with such care and propriety that one might easily imagine the inhabitants had only just stepped away from their duties. We were particularly taken with the lady engaged in the making of butter, whose skill, good humour, and willingness to explain her art rendered the demonstration exceedingly charming. The grounds themselves were lovely and tranquil, and our enjoyment was much increased by the presence of a most delightful chicken, who wandered the village at her leisure, observing visitors with calm authority and behaving as though the entire settlement were arranged solely for her convenience. Altogether, it was a visit that afforded both instruction and amusement, and one we should recommend with the greatest satisfaction.
