We were lucky with the weather and the boat team catch all opportunities to make it unforgetable day! The lunch was tasty with a lot of vegies! Thank you guys for being active, energetic and happy people! We did the AM trip and left at Russell on the way back to spend the afternoon and then take the provided ferry back to Paihia. That worked great for us making full day experience.
We were very excited as it was our first time with this experience and was hoping for a close encounter with marine mammals or at least a good close up or get a voucher if we are unable to as per the terms. We did saw some dolphins flipping but from a long distance, could hardly spot them and they looked the size of a pea from that far away, so no good. The captain did not wait for the other boats to move away for us to take a closer look, Upon leaving we asked if we could get a voucher for the next time as promised but we were told (we did spot some dolphins from miles away afterall so that apparently counts and had to keep moving due to time constrained) Shouldn't the company allocate enough time for dolphin watching as thats the main attraction for a 4 hours ride, come on? I spoke with other passengers on board and they were equally disheartened, giving such little importance to marine mammals by the operators. Would not recommend or come back again for just a boat ride, not worth $100+
Bbq lunch was really really terrible. Cold soggy olive green beans, dried out potatoe chunks cooked in oven, bitter tough cabbage slices for coleslaw, greasy sausage watery steak and dark chicken drumstick. Couldn’t see any relation of this awful food to a bbq. Served by disinterested staff. But the boat ride and commentary was great. Better to have taken our own picnic lunch and beer and sat outside the ‘licensed’ area which in any case was extensive.
