Loved it!

Highly recommend this trip, but mostly for Otehei Bay! I suffer from sea sickness and it was particularly choppy around the hole in the rock, however with the help of Sea Leg tablets paired with sitting downstairs on the boat I didn’t vomit, although is was touch and go! We did see some dolphins as we left Paihia bay, however it was outside of their allotted time (as we went out during the morning) so we were not able to stop and swim with them, however they did slow down to allow them to cross us without any harm and we did get the opportunity for photos. We didn’t see any whales, so that was a bit disappointing! The crew were super friendly and informed us with tones of information regarding history and wildlife on the islands and even indulge us on the best diving spots for anyone who was interested. Otehei Bay was stunning, as I mentioned we were on the morning tour boat, therefore we got to Urupukapuka island for around 11:15. We decided to stay on the island until 16:00 and it was the best decision! We managed to fit in Kayaking, snorkelling and paddle boarding whilst on the island which was stunning and lots of fun as a grown up family. There are walking routes available for those interested. The BBQ lunch was delicious and exactly what we wanted, including chicken leg, steak and sausage with corn on the cob, salads and pasta. Drinks are a bit expensive, a large can of Pepsi Max costed $5 however they were ice cold and were thoroughly enjoyed alongside ice creams which we also purchased for around $5. Definitely glad I purchased this experience!

Tour around the islands was good but awful lunch

Bbq lunch was really really terrible. Cold soggy olive green beans, dried out potatoe chunks cooked in oven, bitter tough cabbage slices for coleslaw, greasy sausage watery steak and dark chicken drumstick. Couldn’t see any relation of this awful food to a bbq. Served by disinterested staff. But the boat ride and commentary was great. Better to have taken our own picnic lunch and beer and sat outside the ‘licensed’ area which in any case was extensive.

Bay of paradise

We were lucky with the weather and the boat team catch all opportunities to make it unforgetable day! The lunch was tasty with a lot of vegies! Thank you guys for being active, energetic and happy people! We did the AM trip and left at Russell on the way back to spend the afternoon and then take the provided ferry back to Paihia. That worked great for us making full day experience.
