The Kingston Flyer is an iconic vintage steam train that departs the picturesque town of Kingston in the South Island of New Zealand. Located only 40 minutes from Queenstown, the train is powered by the mighty Ab795 steam locomotive and takes passengers on a 1.5-2 hour return journey through some of the most beautiful scenery in the region.

On the journey, you will travel from the sparkling lake on the Kingston foreshore, past alpine mountains, and into the green pastures of Southland. You will also get to learn about the history of the train and the area through commentary from the onboard staff, chat to our friendly drivers, roam the vintage carriages, and get close enough to touch the steam engine.

When the train arrives at Fairlight Railway Station, all passengers disembark for a 20 minute turn around. During this time you can use the facilities, take photos, enjoy complimentary tea and coffee, purchase merchandise or watch the steam locomotive turn around. Children are encouraged to "race the engine" by running along the fenced area. its a lot of fun!!

Brilliant outing for the family! Good value.

My kids loved the Kingston Flyer. We've made a few steam train trips before (in Australia and England) and the Kingston Flyer was by far the best. The narration and history talk given during the journey was exactly what others forget to add and what the Kingston Flyer driver did very well. The kids loved the journey which was much longer than most and great value. The mini race against the train at Fairlight Station was the highlight for our kids, haven't seen that done anywhere yet. Both adults and children seemed to enjoy the outing equally. The private cabins were given to families with kids on our trip which was so great and thoughtful. Loved the whole activity, would certainly do it again.
