On our 15 day trip we travelled around a fair bit of the South Island and on balance Milford Sound just didn't appeal to us. Perhaps if it was nice sunny day (was overcast) with plenty of rainfall just prior then the cruise may well have been worth the long drive. Also, when (like I have, my son hasn't) you have seen the Grand Canyon and it's amazing topograpghy, lived near Niagara Falls (put's the three waterfalls we saw to shame) then I think it may also come down to perspective and I can see why other people may well enjoy it. Cruise staff were great and fish and chips were a welcome bonus.
