New Zealand's most visited archaeological site where stories of the 1886 Mount Tarawera Eruption come to life!


The violent volcanic eruption of Mt Tarawera erupted in 1886 which engulfed the village of Te Wairoa in rocks, ash and mud. 150 lives were lost and the eighth wonder of the world; The Pink and White Terraces vanished.


Highlights include:


  • Museum of Te Wairoa - Displayed are a large array of objects over 80 years old excavated from the ruins of the eruption and exhibits of the early settlers.

  • Archaeological Site - Explore the devastation of the eruption as you walk through the excavated sites which once housed the people of Te Wairoa.

  • Guided Tours - For those wishing to gain deeper insights into this unique area, guided tours can be provided (included in the admission price). Hear the powerful stories that cannot be forgotten. Make sure to phone for tour times.

  • Electronic Tour Devices - If you like to take things at your own pace and self-guide, free electronic devices provide a video tour of the archaeological site, or use your own smartphone to tour around by downloading the STQRY app before you visit.

  • Waterfall Trail - View the magnificent Te Wairoa stream and Wairere Falls. Catch a glimpse of the trout in the stream making their way through the crystal clear waters and feel the spray from the stunning waterfall as it plunges 30 metres over the Waitoharuru cliffs.

  • Vi's Teahouse & Gift Store - Established in 1931, Vi's Teahouse and Gift Store provide famous Devonshire Tea and Scones, excellent coffee, and delicious home baking; and check out the comprehensive range of carvings and jewellery.

  • Children - The kids will love digging in the discovery room and exploring the Buried Village with Smithy our archaeologist, and playing on the playground at the end!

    • Open hours: Summer 9am -5pm, Winter 9am - 4.30pm, Open every day excluding Christmas day

    Location: 1180 Tarawera Road, Lake Tarawera, a stunning 15 minute scenic drive from Rotorua

    Conditions: Buried Village allow a 30 minute grace period only either side of a discount booking time. Outside of this grace period you will have to pay the difference in rate to enter. Cancellations within 24 hours non-refundable.

    Customer service was excellent, clean and tidy place, wonderful experience it was just a shame there was a large group visiting that day who thought they owned the place.

    Really great

    All 4 adults enjoyed the walk around the sites and liked the information sheets layout. The treasure blunt for the children is stroke of genius and kept them happily following the trial.

    Wonderful

    The staff were very friendly and very helpful and welcoming. The buried Village was a good insight into the history of this region and very informative on tourism into New Zealand. wonderful, enjoyed it.
