Franz Josef - West Coast Wildlife Centre Entry

The West Coast Wildlife Centre is an all weather visitor attraction located in Franz Josef.

The centre is the sole provider of the BNZ Operation Nest Egg TM incubation and captive rearing programme for the Rowi and Haast tokoeka, New Zealand's rarest Kiwi.

The forest and bush around the West Coast is dense and virtually completely untouched and the undergrowth is home to incredible wildlife, - much of which is rarely seen as it is often only active at night.

The superb quality nature films and interactives at the West Coast Wildlife Centre bring you the very special opportunity to view Juvenile Rowi - our rarest kiwi - in a natural walk through Nocturnal House setting with this fabulous wildlife New Zealand tour.

The West Coast Wildlife Centre is one of the largest Kiwi Captive Rearing facilities in New Zealand and since opening in 2010 has successfully raised and released 180 Kiwi Chicks.

The Centre also brings to life the yarns and tales of the people of the West Coast; who mined, hunted, struggled and lived in this breathtaking but harsh environment.

All entry tickets help contribute to Kiwi conservation and the fight for Kiwi survival.

    Self guided tour

I enjoyed exploring the facility independently and at my own pace. The introduction and booklet were very informative. This is a great activity for a rainy day in Franz Josef, appropriate for all ages.

Informative and fun, we enjoyed it

We enjoyed our visit. We wanted to see kiwis, and there were 2 actively searching for food and very good visible. We spent quite some time observing these animals. It is nice knowing that your money is used to improve the circumstances of the kiwi. The information about the gletsjer was a plus. Especially recommended on a rainy day.

    10 min experience

You can see a kiwi and that’s about it. If your unlucky, the kiwi’s aren’t even walking around and in their houses. Also very difficult to even see them since it’s really dark.

    Smaller than expected

I visited this centre on a self guided tour expecting to see Kiwiw's and other wildlife. The two kiwis were active though difficult to see in their very dark nocturnal habitat. Understandably they have a strict no photo taking policy in there. Other than the kiwis there was one exhibit with small Tuatara lizards but no other wildlife. I'm presuming the back stage tour would be more informative and better value for money.
