Franz Josef - West Coast Wildlife Centre Entry

The West Coast Wildlife Centre is an all weather visitor attraction located in Franz Josef, presenting rare Kiwi in an authentic environment.

The West Coast Wildlife Centre is an all weather visitor attraction located in Franz Josef.

The centre is the sole provider of the BNZ Operation Nest Egg TM incubation and captive rearing programme for the Rowi and Haast tokoeka, New Zealand's rarest Kiwi.

The forest and bush around the West Coast is dense and virtually completely untouched and the undergrowth is home to incredible wildlife, - much of which is rarely seen as it is often only active at night.

The superb quality nature films and interactives at the West Coast Wildlife Centre bring you the very special opportunity to view Juvenile Rowi - our rarest kiwi - in a natural walk through Nocturnal House setting with this fabulous wildlife New Zealand tour.

The West Coast Wildlife Centre is one of the largest Kiwi Captive Rearing facilities in New Zealand and since opening in 2010 has successfully raised and released 180 Kiwi Chicks.

The Centre also brings to life the yarns and tales of the people of the West Coast; who mined, hunted, struggled and lived in this breathtaking but harsh environment.

Exciting and special

We enjoyed our little adventure at Franz Josef - West Coast Wildlife Centre. The best part was definitely seeing the Kiwi up close and without a glass barrier. It made us feel special being able to experience them in a much more personal way.

Good indoor activity

A lovely museum with lots to read! Still interactive enough to keep our 2 year old interested. Also had lunch at the cafe which was great.

A bit pricey but still fine

I was not sure to visit the place honestly when I saw some 1 star reviews on Google and Tripadvisor however the place was better than what they said. A bit pricey for tiny exhibitions, but still worth it as it tells a bunch of info mainly about kiwi. And it guarantees 100% kiwi watching if you’re really into it. You also can learn some ecological stuff about West Coast hence it makes you less bored. Overall I recommend if you have some more hours before/after glaciers.

Up close and personal

What an awesome place! I could not believe how close the 2 Kiwi birds were to me, just wandering around doing their thing. This is the best Kiwi experience I have done as you can truly see them up close and acting naturally. The is also a wealth of information on Kiwis, Glaciers and more. A great place for the kids AND adults to visit.
