Megan S. said... Worth it! This was by far the most expensive tour we booked on our trip in NZ; however, it's the only way to hike on a glacier, as it is too dangerous to go from the ground up the mountain. Clothing--socks, gloves, jacket, over pants, clamp-ons provided. Small fanny-pack for your camera/sunscreen, water. Guides are knowledgeable! This tour wasn't a difficult hike, but you do need to be able to climb and be in regular/fit shape to participate as you do climb through small archway/cave-like ice areas. Also, my partner is claustrophobic and had no issues on this tour. Tours vary based on how the glacier is moving. Our tour guide stayed in a separate area of the glacier from the other tours. If you don't want to hike/walk on a glacier, then other heli tours exist and you can see glaciers from helicopter. The helicopter ride for the heli-hike is short--3.5 minutes each way and it's primary purpose is to get you safely to the glacier for your guided tour.
