Ship cove to fernaux lodge

We got the boat from Picton to ship cove- beautiful boat journey and scenery 1.5 hours. We walked from ship cove to fernaux lodge -15km. So picturesque. First hour is the toughest with inclines. Good footwear an advantage! Our favourite walk so far on our South Island trip! Fernaux lodge was great at the end where we sat and enjoyed a drink while waiting for the boat back. Walking time - 4 hours with stops for food and pictures at an average pace! Highly recommend!

Great Tour!

We were able to see dolphins, penguins and gannets on our ride to Ship Cove. It was a great start to a Great Walk. Furneaux Lodge was very welcoming with drinks and nibbles after our day's walk.

Enjoyable boat ride and nice walk

The boat trip took quite a long time to get out to Ship's Cove, but the trip was interesting and well narrated. The walk is a little steep in the beginning, but after the initial incline is quite pleasant. It rained a little bit during the day, but that didn't ruin our experience. Furneaux Lodge at the end is a lovely place to sit, have a drink and wait for the ferry home. We even picked mussels off the beach and ate them for tea!

A great day out

The skipper's commentary on the way to Ship Cove was informative and funny. Loved the walk, initially challenging but the rest was mostly flat and easy with lovely views over the Sound and inlets. Furneaux Lodge is beautiful and the pub food was great. On the boat back we saw penguins and dolphins and the skipper took time to stop so we could watch them. Recommend this trip!
