The tour was guided by a woman who actually lives in the village and she told us about the Maori traditions and the steaming sulfur pools and how they are still used for cooking. We were invited to eat a piece of sweet corn being cooked in hot sulfur water and it was delicious. The scent of the sulfur springs is quite unusual but still it is a very interesting experience. In the village you may have the chance to see the hydrothermal explosion of the Pohutu geyser (we weren’t lucky).
For those who are interested in the Maori culture this village is a must-do. Just be prepared for the intense sulfur scent and a lot of Maori vocabulary. We certainly had a good time and recommend it to everyone!
