A great ending to our romantic break in Rotorua. Stunning view across the lake. Can be a cool breeze so worth wrapping up. I had the eggs Benedict which was delicious and hubby had the full English which he thoroughly enjoyed. My only suggestion would be hot plates as the chilly weather can cool the food quite quickly. Will definitely return to this magic spot!
Awesome tour our driver/ tour guide was so so cool would do this again mean maori mean ???
Really enjoyed the museum and the walk. The passion of the lady in reception and her wee talk was great. We walked down to the waterfall which was a nice walk. We finished off with a fantastic Devonshire tea at the cafe. Lovely morning and really felt the story come to life.
Such a great experience. The staff are so friendly & informs you of the history before you start the tour. It was really interesting to explore the archeological site. Te Wairoa Falls were definitely my favorite. It was so beautiful. Definitely recommend doing the extra loop to see the waterfall.
The museum is very well done, considering its size. The 3-minute video show really sets the scene. The waterfall is beautiful, and the outside viewings are well- preserved, but there isn’t that much to see, it does require a lot of imagination! Glad I got a discount through Book Me, because I wouldn’t feel that happy about paying a full price ticket for what is provided.
As a homeschooling family here in Rotorua this was perfect for us! Beautiful, friendly staff. Kids had so much fun and looking for clues was definitely a fav for them. Right by the lake so we finished with a swim!
So interesting to see what happened at this place. It makes you really feel vulnerable see what mother nature can do! Definitely worth the trip!
Staff very friendly and accommodating. Great historical record and walk around village. Cafe also worth a visit!
Beautiful grounds. Great exhibitions and historical narratives. Really enjoyed my afternoon here.
Gentle walk though we’ll set up historical site. Lots of interesting information for children/adults of all ages. Due to Covid could not do guided tour but the lady at the desk gave us some valuable historical context which was very interesting. Waterfall is beautiful. Stairs are VERY steep in some places , but well worth thee walk down and up if you are able. Great hour or so spent wandering and kids completed the treasure hunt 💚
I really enjoyed the Buried Village. The museum is interesting with great pictures, information and artefacts. The information is presented in a very readable way. The walk around the site of the village is fascinating too and means so much more after going through the museum. The owners have even put information about NZ plants along the way. It is a pretty walk and the offshoot of the track to the waterfall is a great way to finish up. My photo is not the waterfall. This can be seen just at the start of the waterfall track.
Small museum which is informative The walk around takes approximately an hour. It’s a pretty walk and has interesting points along the way about the eruption of Mt Tarawera Scavenger hunt for children to do along the way Waterfall along the trail but it’s approximately 130 steps down to it but worth it Small gift shop and cafe
Interesting to see and read about , bit guttered we couldn't get all the way down to the waterfall but there had been a slip so algood :) otherwise we had a good walk/wheelchair 😅 RBPD last day of 2022
We took our Japanese student to visit the Buried Village. There were a lot of visuals for her to look at (very little English understood) and walk through the salvaged whare. The waterfall was beautiful and made for a spectacular back drop. Thankyou for preserving this site.
Loved it, very good piece of our history to have preserved so well! Nice to see lots of improvements have been made since I last went about 13 years ago. Love the walk along the stream, the treasure hunt made it fun for the kids, and the dressing up at the end! Was an awesome morning!
Nice walk with nature and the highlight would be the waterfall, worth the steep walk down.
We loved our visit to the Buried Village, which we have not visited for many years. We enjoyed our guided tour with an engaging guide (accompanied by a young family member of the site owners) who really made it all come alive. The museum is well worth a look too, although we hadn't left ourselves enough time to have a good look before our tour started, and by the time we came back from walking around the bush after our tour the museum was closed for the evening. The walk was lovely and, although the side trip down to the waterfall down some steep steps, it was a pleasant walk. If you don't think your knees are up to the steps you can continue along the top instead and just admire the views.
To start the night we arrived and were greeted by the staff and the customer service was amazing ( sorry I can’t remember the waitresses name ). We ordered our food and drinks and were eagerly waiting as we had seen another customers dinner and it looked amazing ! Both entree and main were delicious , I couldn’t put a fault at anything , cooked amazingly portions were plenty overall a really amazing first time . We will definitly be back!
Very interesting walking tour through the valley, learning about the history of the volcanic area. The geothermal features aren't as spectacular as those at Waiotapu but still impressive. We thought that the boat tour was perhaps not worth the extra cost ...until we saw the natural geyser go off. Apparently it only happens after a lot of rain so we were lucky. Much more exciting to watch than the Lady Knox Geyser.
This was a long walk, but very worth while and very interesting. It was long as we spent ages reading all the info at each site as well as taking in all the views. The boat tour and the guide were great. We had done the Buried Village museum in the morning and this in the afternoon and it tied in beautifully to bring the whole story together. We saw the volcanoes and the site of the pink and white terraces. Great to see the wee geyser as well. Fantastic afternoon.
We really enjoyed the entire 3 hours. The walking path to the lake is very well signed & the provided map with details at each stop is helpful & informative. There are many beautiful lookouts & interesting features. The boat trip was a fun little cruise, especially on a sunny day & our captain was funny & a great narrator. Very cool to be able to see the geyser! It would have felt pricey at full price but at the discounted Bookme price is was really great value. Glad we went & recommend !
It was a great experience with nice walk and views! The views are even better in real life than photos!!!!
A very nice easy walk for the all family. It took us 2.5 hours to walk to the lake with my 4 YO child (with a lot of stops). The boat trip was beautiful. We bought delicious sandwiches at the cafe. A great experience
What a fabulous experience. My husband and I enjoyed the walk although it took us a little longer than expected and we only just made the boat. It was so exciting walking around each corner not knowing what we would see. The information was great to read and very interesting... so much that we learnt. The trip on the boat was lovely. The skipper, who was also the tour guide, shared so much history and brought our journey to life. He know his stuff and was able to answer questions as well. A definite MUST VISIT... you could only take pushchairs about half way around, but there are bus stops placed along the way if you get tired of walking.... The whole walk (including reading boards and taking photos) took us two hours. The boat trip was 45 minutes. Forgot to mention the cafe at the top. Really friendly staff, clean environment and yummy food. Only downside of the who visit was that the toilets were downstairs, down a driveway which I observed an elder lady struggling to get up and down.
Not only park is beautiful but also the 6 km road to park is well worth visit. We love colored stones, wild flowers, black swans and other species. Park service is very good too.
This was so much fun and an opportunity not to be missed as how often would you get to go on a 1940 build duck.
One of the best experiences we’ve had since our stay in Rotorua. Full of amazing facts and very knowledgeable guide on the boat cruise.
We had a fantastic walking down into the valley. It was very special to be able to walk among nature the whole way. The paths are well signposted and pass through spectacular geothermal areas, and the viewing areas are well placed and well maintained. Loved the art work on the way and the differences in landscape. Sadly we missed the final part - the wetland area to Lake Rotomahana as we were concerned we could miss the boat cruise. The boat cruise was very informative and it was fantastic to see Mount Tarawera up close. Thoroughly recommend to all and would happily go again.
We did this walk and loved it. Some real wow moments. An easy walk and plenty of time. The boat trip was great as we had the guide telling us what it all was. Just wished we had a guide to tell us more, on the walk.
So beautiful! The best views are at the end of the track in bird paradise!
A stunning day out, a must-see if you visit Rotorua. Arrive early and take your time to enjoy the natural beauty of this area. Make sure you bring sufficient water & snacks as it gets hot on a lovely sunny day. Also, you need to wear suitable footwear as your walk on loose gravel footpaths. We took the full experience option which was the 45-minute boat trip once you get to the lake. The Captain gives an informative commentary as you proceed. There are toilets en route and inclusive tour buses that run often for those that require them.
The normal trail was easy. The additional hike up was tiring but doable and totally worth it. I was glad that I was given extra time to reach the lake. The boat cruise is a great way to end the hike.
We spent a lovely three hours walking then boating through New Zealands newest geothermal area. Signage along the way was informative and interesting and helped us appreciate the devastation and extent of the Mt Tarawera eruption. The four kilometre walk to the lake was mostly downhill with lots of stops along the way to marvel at Mother Nature's wrath! A shuttle bus took us back up the hill after the boat trip. I really recommend this fascinating place, the only thing missing is dinosaurs!
