I can't say my knowledge of ornithology is great, but it improved substantially with Allen's infinitesimal knowledge and passion for the subject. There didn't seem to be any question that he couldn't answer, and he catered well to a group of diverse people.
Furthermore, he also provided lots of insights into the local māori and their history which was icing on the cake for anybody looking to broaden their knowledge of tangata whenua.
