Get your walking shoes on to enjoy a stroll along the well-maintained trails at Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari.

This protected ecosystem has one of the largest pest-proof fences in the world to allow New Zealand's most vulnerable and endangered wildlife to survive.

By visiting, not only will you enjoy the beautiful forest and bird song but you will be helping to protect this area for future generations with all proceeds going back into the conservation of this environment.

Feeding stations are set up along the way with seating available for those who are hoping to see some of the resident birds such as hihi (stitch bird), korimako (bellbird), pītoitoi (North Island robin) and kākā (cheeky forest parrot).

Our Visitor Centre, Manu Tioriori is open daily from 9am to 4pm with toilet facilities, information, refreshments and souvenirs available for purchase.

This is a family-friendly day out that is suitable for most people including pushchairs and some wheelchairs (please contact for accessibility details). Be sure to check out the fantastic treetop views from the 16-meter high observation tower too!

Notes

  • Important Please Note:

    Dogs are not permitted anywhere on Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari unless they are certified predator/species tracking dogs or disability assist dogs that are muzzled.

    Bikes are not permitted on the mountain tracks.

    You will be entering a biosecurity controlled area:

    Check that you are not taking any risk material into the area e.g. live mice or other animals, fruit or seeds.

    Double gates are there for security reasons; do not risk any inadvertent entries or escapes through inappropriate use.

    All wildlife is protected and must not be disturbed.

    Anything you take into the area must be taken out again (this includes any rubbish you create during your visit).

    Keep to the paths and follow signs as directed.

    Pest control operations may be in progress at any time:

    Keep well away from any baits

    Do not interfere with coloured ribbon markers

    Do not touch or interfere with traps or tracking tunnels

    Supervise children at all times

    All species are living in a wild and natural environment:

    They are free to come and go as they wish.

    We cannot guarantee what you may or may not see.

    Please respect their home and move quietly for optimal chances of seeing them.

    Peanutbutter is used as a predator bait please beware if you or any children under your supervision have peanut allergies.

Beautiful walk

This place is certainly worth a visit. The tracks are great, well maintained & sign posted. Although we didn't get to see a lot of birds we could hear them & still enjoyed the peaceful, beautiful surroundings.

Idyllic and informative

Interesting tracks, incredibly peaceful with lots of birdsong. I enjoyed the information given in the track about both fauna and flora.

Magical place

Beutiful forest, saw many native birds and listened to birdsongs. Loved the viewing tower - a Kaka landed next to me and we were looking at each other for several mInutes. The whole time wqs amazing.
