Half-day experience in the forge: The half-day course is great for those who would like to get a little taste of what blacksmithing is all about. You’ll be introduced to some of the basics and will have time for a small hand forged project. Here are some of the things you can choose from: a fire poker, coat hook, garden tool, herb/pizza knife, pizza oven tool, corkscrew or bottle opener.

Duration: 9am - 1pm, morning tea provided

Full day experience in the forge: More time, better projects! A full day is great for knife making. Several styles are possible such as a hunting/camping or a chef’s knife. You will hand forge your knife from scratch (with a little help of course!) and will fit it with a wooden handle. A small axe is also possible to make during this workshop. Other fun projects are a door knocker, a bird feeder, flowers, gardening tools, BBQ tools or how about a set of tools for your fireplace or pizza oven? Do you have another idea? A great day out

Despite having had no experience of smithing before, I thought that I would sign up for this course to do something a bit different from the usual tourist activities. I really enjoyed my day at the forge. Rob was a really great teacher, explaining all the steps in the process and allowing me to be in charge of the more simple steps along the way. Arja was lovely too, preparing a delicious lunch and snack breaks. Bonus, I made a really great-looking knife!

Life long dream come true.

I'd give it 6 stars if I could. For anyone wanting to learn the ancient art of the Blacksmith or just have a fun day and go home with something you've made and a great story to tell, this experience is well worth it. Rob is always willing to pass on his wealth of knowledge and experience. His enthusiasm for the craft is contagious and the full day experience is honestly not enough for any avid fan of crafting glowing hot metal. I could have spent a week there. Arja's authentic, home cooking was phenomenal and really added to the whole experience. You can't learn on an empty stomach. I will definitely be going back to Kowhai Forge.

Great Experience-Great Hospitality-Great Outcome

Hi, this is the second advanced tool making course Ive taken with Rob and this time I made a rounding hammer for my home forge. Under Rob's oversight and direction I made a great hammer. At the same time I got to pick his brains on the other projects going on. The hospitality was fantastic, with great food during the breaks. a 10/10 experience.
